Speaking Engagements

Kimani Norrington-Sands, Ph.D., manifests healing through personal example and professional work as a speaker, author, and therapist.  Dr. Norrington-Sands’ successful experiences of navigating challenging situations has uniquely prepared her to relate to the experiences of others and present as relatable to others.  Her relatability as well as contextual understanding of issues and communication styles provides opportunities for those whom she works with to broaden their knowledge base, explore perspectives, as well as manifest healing individually and collectively.

Kimani Norrington-Sands, Ph.D., is a Magna Cum Laude Graduate of Spelman College and received her doctoral training in Clinical Psychology (experiences in substance abuse recovery, domestic violence shelter, rape crisis center, schools, and community-based clinics).  As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and trauma survivor, Dr. Norrington-Sands manifests healing through personal example and in professional contexts such as in her book, “Butterfly Landing” (healing journey of a Black girl who has survived sexual abuse) as well as in speaking engagements, providing therapy, serving on panels such as for The Association of Black Psychologists and the California Association of African-American Superintendents and Administrators, as well as co-writing a Black Youth & Suicide paper which was presented at a Congressional Black Caucus Hearing.

Presentation Topics

What is Going On & What to Do?
Black Youth & Suicide

In light of recent trends that indicates that the suicide rate for Black youth in certain age groups is increasing while the rate for White youth is decreasing, this interactive presentation provides a contextual framework for understanding the experiences which may impact the functioning of Black youth.  The presentation also includes a discussion of risk factors, warning signs, prevention efforts, and intervention strategies.

Supporting Your Child(ren) & Yourself During Challenging Times

While being a parent is beautiful, it is also challenging under ideal circumstances.  The current environmental stressors are magnifying the challenges of many parents.  Just as the airplane notice announces for parents traveling with children to put their own masks on first, it is essential that parents take good care of themselves so that they can best support their child(ren).  This interactive presentation provides a framework for how parents can support their child(ren) while also practicing self-care for themselves.

Cultural Context & Trauma
Implications for Black Youth

Black youth may experience trauma through direct and/or indirect (seeing or hearing about incidences of racial trauma) exposure.  The contextual experiences of trauma for Black youth is often absent in trauma literature and presentations.  This interactive presentation provides an unapologetic contextual understanding of trauma for Black youth as well as offers prevention and intervention strategies.

Is Your Job Mask Making It Hard For You To Breathe?

This interactive presentation is focused on individuals who may experience stress in their places of employment due to issues such as systemic racism, being the only or one of the few of your group, and/or microaggessions.  The presentation will highlight ways that stress may manifest in the lives of participants (e.g., interrupting work-life balance), provide opportunities to reflect costs-benefits of current job, explore possible options related to career, and develop a wellness plan.
